LampTrix
Porto, 2025

LampTrix occupies a hybrid territory between art and design, functioning simultaneously as a sculptural light artwork and a piece of furniture. The work consists of 64 crystalline acrylic cylinders arranged in an 8 × 8 matrix, each illuminated by addressable LEDs controlled through custom software developed specifically for the project.

The title LampTrix derives from the word matrix, referring to the geometric structure of the piece, while also evoking tricks—suggesting illusion, wonder, and the subtle magic of light. The work continuously transforms itself through luminous patterns generated by computational processes inspired by classic random algorithms and Voronoi diagram techniques. Rather than displaying fixed images, it produces an endless flow of evolving visual configurations.

The movement of light across the matrix recalls the organic and hypnotic dynamics of lava lamps, where simple physical principles give rise to endlessly changing forms. Here, however, the transformations emerge from code: software becomes the invisible material shaping the behaviour of the object.

The acrylic cylinders conduct and diffuse light through their structure in a manner reminiscent of optical fibres, translating digital information into a tangible spatial phenomenon. Light appears to travel through the crystalline elements, creating gradients, reflections and visual depth that blur the distinction between material and immaterial form.

By combining computational design, custom software, and ambient illumination, LampTrix explores the permeability between functional objects and artistic expression. It proposes a living artefact whose appearance is never fixed, revealing how algorithms, materials and light can collaborate to create an experience that is at once decorative, functional and contemplative.
